Som (Thai: ส้ม 青木瓜沙拉) which’s north-eastern Thai word means sour taste and Tum (Thai: ตำ) means pounding with pestle to crush or break ingredients. Somtum is a distinctive-sour and spicy dish that is made by using a pestle and mortar to crush and mix all ingredients together.

Som Tum has all the benefits of any vegetable salad, being full of fiber and vitamins while remaining low on calories, fat and carbs.

Som tam is a Thai papaya salad. Don’t confuse Thai salads with the boring leafy salads the rest of the world enjoys. Like most Thai food, som tam teases the taste buds with its sweet, spicy, salty and sour elements. Som Tam is served in restaurants and by vendors at street markets all over Thailand.

While papaya salad is a signature dish in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, it’s the Thai version that is the most famous. However, food historians believe that this dish originated in Laos. This is because papaya salad is especially popular in Thailand’s northeastern region of Isaan, which shares a border with Laos.
