Grandma’s Homemade Bread – Best homemade bread
We are getting close to Thanksgiving and that makes me think of my Grandma’s homemade bread. Today at Deep South Texas I will try to recreate the bread my Grandma used to make. It takes me two tries, but I am very happy with the results. The recipe is below, and I have includes the changes (Plan B) that I have made. I hope you give it a try.
Grandma’s Homemade Bread Recipe
Mix ¼ cup lukewarm water and 1 packet of yeast. Set aside (I am using Fleishmann’s RapidRise Instant Yeast)
In a large mixing bowl combine: 2 tsp salt 4 tsp sugar 1 Tablespoon shortening (I am using Crisco) Add 1 cup boiling water and stir well, allow to cool
Mix in 1 cup bread flour – stir well
Add ½ cup water – stir (Plan B changes this to 1 cup water)
Add 1 cup bread flour – stir
Add yeast mixture (from above) – stir
Add 1 cup bread flour or more until you have a moderately stiff dough
(Plan B changes this to 3 cups bread flour)
Knead the dough for 8 minutes (this was not in the original recipe)
Place in oiled bowl, cover, let rise until double
Punch down and let it rise again, about 1 hour
Divide into 2 and place into 2 oiled loaf pans, let rise until doubled
Bake at 375 F for 40 – 45 minutes
