Homemade French Onion Soup

4 lbs yellow onions, sliced
1/2 cup butter, 1 stick
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 cup red wine
3 pints beef stock
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2 bay leaves
1 tsp dried thyme
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
French Bread, sliced 1 inch thick, toasted
8 oz Gruyere cheese, grated
